Our Favourite Organic Skincare Ingredients for Sensitive Skin

Megan Carlisle, Esthétician·December 30, 2024·5 min read

Sensitive and reactive skin is the most common presentation we see at Prairie Bloom. Not everyone has a clinical condition like rosacea or eczema — many clients simply have skin that flushes easily, reacts to fragrance, or takes longer to recover from irritation. These are the ingredients we reach for again and again.

Oat extract (Avena sativa)

Colloidal oat is one of the most well-researched soothing ingredients in dermatology. It reduces transepidermal water loss, soothes itch and inflammation, and is extremely well tolerated even by the most reactive skin. Look for it in cleansers and moisturizers. The science on this one is unusually solid for the skincare industry.

Rosehip seed oil

Cold-pressed rosehip is rich in linoleic acid — an omega-6 fatty acid that's often deficient in acne-prone and sensitive skin. It helps repair barrier function without clogging pores, and its natural vitamin A content supports cell turnover gently. It absorbs cleanly and layers well under moisturizer.

Centella asiatica (Cica)

Cica has been used in wound healing for centuries and is having a well-deserved moment in skincare. It stimulates collagen synthesis, reduces redness, and accelerates barrier repair. It's particularly effective after professional treatments — our clients use it the week following any exfoliating facial.

Chamomile (Bisabolol)

Bisabolol, derived from chamomile, is a gentle anti-inflammatory that calms reactive skin without sensitizing it. It's particularly good for clients who react to fragrance — bisabolol provides a mild skin-softening effect without the aromatic compounds that trigger reactions.

If you're unsure what your skin needs, a consultation with one of our esthéticians is a good starting point. We'll assess your barrier function, identify sensitivities, and put together a product protocol that actually suits your skin — not just your skin type on a quiz.
